Does TRICARE cover TMS therapy in Utah?
Yes. TRICARE covers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for major depressive disorder when its coverage criteria are met, and Neurobehavioral Center for Growth (NBCG) accepts TRICARE for NeuroStar TMS at our South Ogden, Bountiful, and Salt Lake City clinics. Our team verifies your TRICARE benefits, checks current TriWest requirements for your plan, and submits the prior authorization before treatment begins, so you know what to expect before your first session.
Depression after service is real, and it is treatable
Service members, veterans, retirees, and military families deal with some of the heaviest stressors there are: deployments, relocations, loss, injury, and the strain of carrying on when you are not okay. If antidepressants have not given you your life back, you have more options than another prescription.
Meds haven’t worked, or the side effects are too much
TMS works on the brain directly rather than through your bloodstream, so it does not cause the weight gain, fatigue, emotional blunting, or sexual side effects many people get from antidepressants.
Fits a demanding schedule
Sessions run about 19–37 minutes. No sedation and no recovery time, so most patients drive themselves in and go straight back to their day.
We navigate TRICARE so you don’t have to
Referrals, authorizations, and plan rules can feel like a second job. Our team handles the coordination and tells you exactly what, if anything, you need from your PCM.
Eligibility and coverage depend on your specific TRICARE plan and current TRICARE/TriWest policy. We verify this for you at no cost.
From first call to first session: what to expect
Here is exactly how it works for TRICARE patients. No surprises, no runaround.
Call or fill out the form
A real NBCG team member reaches out, usually the same or next business day. Have your TRICARE plan and sponsor information handy if you can, but it’s not required to get started.
Free consultation: telehealth or in person
Meet with our team, ask every question you have, and decide whether TMS is the right next step. We start your TRICARE benefits investigation at this visit so you know where you stand before committing to anything.
Psychiatric intake and prior authorization
A psychiatric provider reviews your history, previous medications, and therapy so we can confirm TMS is appropriate. We use that documentation to submit your authorization to TRICARE’s West Region contractor, TriWest, before treatment begins.
Daily sessions with the NeuroStar system
Typically five sessions a week for four to six weeks. Alongside TMS, you can work through our 5-Pillar Mindfulness Program to build lasting skills.
We stay with you
Follow-up visits, medication management, and therapy continue with the same team. We don’t hand you off when your TMS course ends.
What TRICARE plan do you have, and what should you expect?
Requirements differ by plan and can change. This is a general guide; we confirm the specifics for your situation.
| Your plan | What this usually means for TMS |
|---|---|
| TRICARE Prime (including active duty) | Care outside your primary care manager often involves a referral from your PCM, plus authorization. We tell you exactly what to request and help coordinate it. |
| TRICARE Select | Generally no referral is needed to see a specialist, though TMS itself typically requires prior authorization, which we submit. |
| TRICARE Reserve Select / Retired Reserve / Young Adult | Typically similar to Select. We verify your plan’s rules and cost-share before you begin. |
| TRICARE For Life | Medicare is usually billed first, with TRICARE as secondary. We confirm how your coverage will work together. |
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, enrollment group, and any applicable cost-shares. We give you a cost estimate before you start treatment.
You may be a candidate if…
- You are an adult with major depressive disorder (MDD)
- You’ve tried one or more antidepressants without enough relief
- You’ve had side effects you couldn’t tolerate from medication
- You want a non-invasive, medication-free option
- You have OCD and want an adjunct to your current treatment
- You need treatment with no downtime: drive yourself to and from sessions
- You’re TRICARE-eligible and want someone to handle the paperwork
TMS is not appropriate for everyone. For example, people with certain metal implants in or near the head are typically not candidates. Your provider will review this with you.
How NeuroStar® TMS works
TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) uses short magnetic pulses to stimulate the part of the brain that is underactive in depression. It is done in the office. No surgery, no anesthesia, no memory loss.
Mapping session
Your first session includes a quick motor-threshold test so the magnetic field is calibrated to your brain.
Recline while the coil does the work
A small magnetic coil rests against your head. You’re awake and alert the whole time and may feel a light tapping sensation.
Back to your day
Sessions take about 19–37 minutes. Drive yourself home or back to work. No recovery time is needed.
Results build over weeks
Many patients notice mood shifts around weeks two to three. Individual results vary.

Honest answers about TMS, PTSD, and TBI
Many service members and veterans live with depression alongside PTSD, anxiety, sleep problems, or the effects of a head injury. We’ll be straightforward about what TMS can and can’t do.
What TMS is cleared for
NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder, and as an adjunct for OCD. TRICARE coverage for TMS is for major depressive disorder.
When PTSD is part of the picture
PTSD and depression often occur together. TMS is not FDA-cleared for PTSD itself, so your plan may combine TMS for depression with trauma-informed therapy and medication management from our team. Learn about PTSD care at NBCG →
Head injury or TBI history
A history of head injury is something your provider will review before recommending TMS. We also offer evaluation and support for brain injury. Learn about TBI support →

TRICARE & TMS: frequently asked questions
Does TRICARE cover TMS therapy?
Yes. TRICARE covers TMS for major depressive disorder when its coverage criteria are met. Those criteria are set by TRICARE and its regional contractor and can change, so NBCG verifies the current requirements for your plan and submits the prior authorization before you begin.
Does NBCG accept TRICARE for TMS near Hill AFB?
Yes. NBCG accepts TRICARE and offers NeuroStar TMS at clinics in South Ogden, Bountiful, and Salt Lake City, serving Hill Air Force Base, Layton, Clearfield, Roy, and the surrounding area. Call (385) 452-8566 to confirm your benefits.
Do I need a referral to start TMS with TRICARE?
It depends on your plan. TRICARE Prime patients may need a referral from their primary care manager; TRICARE Select patients generally do not need a referral to see a specialist, though TMS typically requires prior authorization. We tell you exactly what applies to you and help with the coordination. You do not need a referral just to schedule a free consultation.
Who qualifies for TMS under TRICARE?
TRICARE’s coverage is for major depressive disorder, generally in patients who have already tried other treatments such as antidepressant medication and psychotherapy without enough improvement. Specific criteria, such as diagnosis severity and treatment history, are set by TRICARE’s policy. Your free consultation and psychiatric intake determine whether you meet them.
How much will TMS cost me with TRICARE?
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, enrollment group, and any cost-shares. We verify your benefits and give you an estimate before you begin treatment, so there are no billing surprises.
Is TMS covered for PTSD?
TRICARE’s TMS coverage is for major depressive disorder, and NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for depression and, as an adjunct, for OCD, not for PTSD. Many veterans have both depression and PTSD, and our team can combine TMS for depression with trauma-informed therapy and medication management. We’ll discuss the right plan at your consultation.
How long does a TMS course take?
A typical course is five sessions per week for four to six weeks. Each session lasts about 19–37 minutes, and you can drive yourself home or back to work afterward.
Does TMS hurt, and what are the side effects?
Most patients feel a tapping sensation on the scalp. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort or headache, which usually eases after the first week. There is a rare risk of seizure (less than 0.1% per patient). TMS does not cause the weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or sedation associated with some antidepressants.
How is TMS different from ECT?
TMS uses magnetic pulses rather than electrical current, requires no anesthesia, and does not cause memory loss. You stay awake and can drive yourself home. ECT requires anesthesia and a recovery period.
Can I do my first consultation by telehealth?
Yes. Your free consultation and follow-up visits can be done by secure video from anywhere in Utah. TMS treatment sessions themselves take place in person at our clinics.
In crisis or having thoughts of suicide?
You don’t have to wait for an appointment. Call or text 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line (or text 838255), or call 911 in an emergency. Support is free, confidential, and available 24/7, including for service members and their families.
