Built on a Legacy of Clinical Excellence

NBCG was founded by Dr. Jennifer Cardinal, a nationally respected neuropsychologist whose early work focused on complex neurodevelopmental diagnoses like autism, ADHD, learning disorders, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Her reputation for precision in differential diagnosis shaped NBCG's philosophy: every patient deserves clarity, empathy, and a truly individualized approach. Today, that same philosophy guides our full continuum of psychological testing and neuropsychological testing in Utah — serving children, teens, and adults across Salt Lake City, Bountiful, and South Ogden.

In Partnership with Ambry Genetics
Genetic Testing for Autism & Neurological Differences

Understanding the Why Behind Your Diagnosis

Go deeper with genetic testing — offered through NBCG's partnership with Ambry Genetics.

After receiving a clinical diagnosis from our expert team at NBCG, many families find themselves with a new set of questions. Why is this happening? Could there be a genetic reason? What does it mean for the rest of the family?

That's where genetic testing comes in. A clinical diagnosis tells you what is happening — genetic testing helps explain why, by looking at your or your child's DNA for specific variations that may be driving their symptoms.

It's not required, and it's not for everyone — but for families who want that deeper layer of understanding, NBCG has made it easy to explore through our partnership with Ambry Genetics, a leading genetic testing company.

More Targeted Medical Care

Some genetic variants linked to autism also signal risk for cardiac, kidney, or immune conditions. A genetic profile helps doctors monitor the right things proactively.

Smarter Treatment Decisions

Genetic results can reveal why certain therapies or medications may work better for your child — and help avoid approaches that are less likely to help.

Answers for the Whole Family

An identified genetic variant can inform the health picture for siblings, parents, and future planning — turning one result into insight for everyone.

A Clearer Path Forward

Knowing the underlying cause helps families feel more prepared for school planning, care decisions, and specialist conversations.

Genetic testing is typically pursued after a formal clinical diagnosis. Not sure if it's right for your family? Our team is happy to walk you through it — no pressure, no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A psychological evaluation focuses on emotional, behavioral, and mental health functioning — including mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, and personality. A neuropsychological evaluation goes deeper into how the brain itself is working, assessing cognitive abilities like memory, attention, processing speed, executive functioning, and learning. At NBCG, our doctoral-level psychologists and neuropsychologists help determine which type of evaluation is right for you based on your concerns and history.

  • Testing is a good fit if you or your child are struggling in ways that haven't been fully explained — whether that's difficulty in school, challenges with focus or memory, unexplained behavioral changes, or a feeling that something is off but no one has been able to pinpoint why. Common reasons people seek testing at NBCG include suspected ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, cognitive decline, memory concerns, mood disorders, and traumatic brain injury. A brief intake consultation can help clarify which evaluation is most appropriate.

  • All evaluations at NBCG are conducted by doctoral-level licensed psychologists and neuropsychologists — not interns or technicians working unsupervised. Our Psychology Team includes specialists in neurodevelopmental conditions, OCD, cognitive decline, and complex or overlapping diagnoses. Psychological testing is available at our Salt Lake City, Bountiful, and South Ogden clinics.

  • A screening is a brief set of questionnaires used to determine whether a full evaluation is warranted — it does not result in a diagnosis. A full ADHD evaluation at NBCG involves comprehensive cognitive and behavioral testing, clinical interviews, and collateral information from parents or partners. The result is a detailed report with a clear diagnosis (or explanation of why ADHD doesn't fit) and specific recommendations for treatment, school accommodations, or workplace supports.

  • Yes. NBCG's psychoeducational evaluations are specifically designed to assess the cognitive and academic skills needed to qualify for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 accommodation plans. Our reports are written to meet school district requirements and include specific, actionable recommendations that schools can use to build appropriate support plans.

  • The length of testing depends on what is being assessed. Most evaluations at NBCG involve one to three in-person testing sessions, each lasting two to four hours. Some comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations may require additional time. After testing is complete, there is a feedback session where your psychologist walks you through the findings, diagnosis, and recommendations in detail.

  • Once testing is complete, your NBCG psychologist will score and interpret all assessments and write a comprehensive evaluation report. You'll then meet for a feedback session to review the findings, discuss the diagnosis, and go over specific recommendations. The written report is provided to you and can be shared with schools, employers, other providers, or anyone else involved in your care. NBCG's integrated model also allows for direct coordination with your therapist or psychiatrist if you're already receiving care with us.

  • Yes. NBCG provides psychological and neuropsychological testing for children, teens, and adults. Testing for children often focuses on ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, and school-related challenges. Adult testing commonly addresses ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, cognitive decline, memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, dementia screening, and traumatic brain injury.

  • ADHD diagnosis at NBCG involves a comprehensive evaluation that includes standardized rating scales, clinical interviews with the patient and — for children — parents and teachers, and direct cognitive testing to assess attention, working memory, and executive functioning. We look at the full picture rather than relying on a single questionnaire, which leads to more accurate diagnosis and better treatment recommendations.

  • An autism evaluation at NBCG typically includes a clinical interview, review of developmental history, standardized autism-specific assessments, behavioral observation, and caregiver input. For children, we may also gather information from teachers or school staff. The goal is not just to confirm or rule out autism, but to understand your child's unique strengths and challenges so we can recommend the most effective supports and interventions.

  • Yes. Adult autism evaluations are available at NBCG. Many adults seek an autism diagnosis after years of feeling different or struggling in ways they couldn't explain — and a formal evaluation can provide clarity, validation, and access to appropriate supports. Our psychologists are experienced in recognizing how autism presents in adults, which can look quite different from how it presents in children.

  • A psychoeducational evaluation assesses how a child learns — including cognitive abilities, academic achievement, processing speed, working memory, and language skills. It helps identify learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and auditory processing disorder, and provides a clear picture of a child's strengths and areas of need. At NBCG, these evaluations are conducted by doctoral-level psychologists and include a detailed report with school-ready recommendations.

  • School-based evaluations are valuable but are typically limited in scope — schools assess whether a child qualifies for services, not necessarily what is driving the difficulty. NBCG's independent psychological evaluations are more comprehensive, include a broader range of assessments, and result in a detailed diagnostic report. Many families seek an independent evaluation to get a fuller picture or a second opinion, especially when school testing hasn't led to clear answers or appropriate support.

  • For best results, arrive well-rested and having eaten. Bring any prior evaluation reports, school records, or relevant medical history. For children's evaluations, parents should be prepared to participate in an interview and complete rating forms about their child's behavior and development. If you take medication, continue your normal routine unless instructed otherwise by your evaluating psychologist. There is no need to "study" — testing is designed to capture your genuine current functioning.

  • Many major insurance plans cover psychological and neuropsychological testing when it is medically necessary. NBCG accepts most major insurance including SelectHealth, BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Regence, Meritain Health, Samera Health, Tricare, PEHP, Molina Healthcare, Medicaid, GEHA, Vitori, and EMI Health. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and the type of evaluation requested. We recommend calling your insurance provider in advance to ask about your benefits for psychological testing.
