Understanding speech therapy

What Is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy (also called speech-language therapy or SLP services) is evidence-based treatment delivered by a licensed Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to help people of all ages improve communication, language, fluency, and in some cases, feeding and swallowing.

At NBCG, our licensed SLPs work with children, teens, and adults — from toddlers learning their first words to adults with communication needs. While we see a high volume of pediatric patients, speech therapy at NBCG is truly for every age. Every treatment path is unique to you.

Our SLPs strongly prefer in-person sessions at our Utah clinics — because the hands-on, face-to-face environment produces the best outcomes. Telehealth is available in limited circumstances when in-person is not possible.

  • Evidence-based, play-based therapy for children of all ages
  • Sessions typically weekly or biweekly at our Utah clinic locations
  • Integrated with ABA, occupational therapy, and mental health teams at NBCG
  • Parent participation encouraged throughout your child's journey
  • Founded 2011 — one of Utah's most trusted behavioral health organizations
Q: Who can benefit from speech therapy in Utah?
Children showing signs of speech sound disorders, language delays, stuttering, social communication difficulties (often related to autism spectrum disorder), or feeding challenges can all benefit. NBCG's SLPs serve toddlers through adults across Northern Utah.
Q: How is NBCG's speech therapy different from a school-based SLP?
School SLPs are limited to educationally-relevant goals. NBCG's clinical SLPs provide comprehensive, individualized therapy targeting the full range of communication skills — including feeding, social language, and literacy support — integrated with behavioral and mental health services when needed.
Q: Does NBCG offer speech therapy for autism?
Yes. Our SLPs work hand-in-hand with NBCG's Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and ABA therapy teams to provide coordinated, whole-child support for children on the autism spectrum. This collaboration is one of NBCG's most powerful differentiators.
Q: Does NBCG offer speech therapy for adults?
Yes. While most of our speech therapy patients are children and teens, NBCG's SLPs also work with adults who have communication, fluency, voice, or social language needs. No referral is needed — simply request an appointment and our team will connect you with the right provider.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Speech Therapy in Utah

Answers to the questions Utah parents and patients ask us most often.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If your child is not meeting speech and language milestones for their age — for example, not saying words by 12–18 months, not combining words by age 2, or having speech that is difficult for strangers to understand by age 4 — a speech therapy evaluation is a great next step. NBCG's licensed SLPs offer comprehensive evaluations with no referral needed and same-week appointments often available.

Does NBCG offer speech therapy for toddlers in Utah?

Yes. NBCG's speech language pathologists specialize in early intervention for toddlers as young as 18 months. Early intervention is one of the most impactful things you can do — research shows children who receive speech therapy early make significantly faster progress. Our SLPs use play-based, parent-involved approaches tailored to young children.

Does NBCG offer speech therapy for adults in Utah?

Yes. While NBCG sees a high volume of pediatric patients, speech therapy at NBCG is available for all ages including teens and adults. Adult speech therapy may address articulation, fluency, social communication, voice, and other communication needs. No referral is needed — simply request an appointment and our team will connect you with the right provider.

Does NBCG accept insurance for speech therapy?

Yes. NBCG accepts most major insurance plans including SelectHealth, BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Tricare, Regence, Meritain, Samera, PEHP, EMI Health, GEHA, Molina Healthcare, Vitori, and more. Call (801) 683-1062 to verify your specific benefits. Self-pay options are also available.

What makes NBCG's speech therapy different from other Utah providers?

NBCG is Utah's most comprehensive behavioral health organization. Unlike stand-alone speech therapy clinics, NBCG's SLPs work side-by-side with BCBAs, occupational therapists, psychologists, and mental health therapists — all under one roof. NBCG strongly prefers in-person therapy at Utah clinic locations for the best outcomes. With 4 clinic locations across Northern Utah and same-week appointments often available, we make it easy to get started.

Does NBCG offer speech therapy for autism in Utah?

Yes. NBCG's SLPs work in close coordination with NBCG's ABA therapy team to support children on the autism spectrum with social communication, language development, and pragmatic skills — all under one roof at NBCG's Utah clinic locations. This integrated approach is one of our most powerful differentiators.

How long does speech therapy take?

Duration varies significantly depending on the nature and severity of the communication challenge. Some patients achieve their goals in a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. At NBCG we set clear, measurable goals from the start and review progress regularly. Your SLP will give you an honest estimate after the initial evaluation and will adjust the plan as your child grows and progresses.
