Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common and chronic mental health condition characterized by two primary components: obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions are intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety or distress. These obsessions can vary widely but often center around themes like contamination fears, harm, forbidden thoughts, or a need for order and symmetry.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that individuals feel driven to perform in response to their obsessions. The goal of these compulsions is to reduce the distress caused by obsessions or to prevent a feared event or situation. However, these actions provide only temporary relief and can become time-consuming and debilitating.

OCD Therapies We Offer:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy designed to help individuals with OCD. It works by gradually exposing a person to feared thoughts, images, or situations (exposure) while guiding them to resist performing compulsive behaviors (response prevention). Over time, this reduces anxiety and weakens the OCD cycle. According to the American Psychiatric Association, ERP is considered a first-line treatment for OCD.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for OCD focuses on helping individuals change their relationship with intrusive thoughts rather than trying to eliminate them. ACT teaches skills such as accepting internal experiences, defusing from obsessive thoughts, and committing to actions aligned with personal values. By reducing the struggle against OCD-related thoughts and urges, ACT helps people build a more flexible, meaningful life even in the presence of discomfort.

  • Obsessive thinking patterns and repetitive behaviors are present in many different psychiatric diagnoses. Through our comprehensive testing, we can help clarify whether you symptoms are related to OCD, or if they are actually related to another psychological disorder that may require differential treatment.

  • Psychiatric medication managementinvolves a medical provider prescribing and monitoring medications to help manage mental health symptoms.

It includes regular check-ins to assess effectiveness and adjust doses if needed.

  • TMS, Spravato, & Ketamine

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Spravato (Esketamine), and ketamine are sometimes used off-label to help individuals with OCD, especially when symptoms do not fully respond to first-line therapies such as ERP or medication. TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to modulate brain activity involved in OCD, while ketamine and Spravato act on glutamate pathways that may influence obsessive thinking and mood regulation. These treatments are more commonly used for treatment-resistant depression, and when depression co-occurs with OCD, they may provide additional benefit by reducing overall symptom severity and improving emotional regulation.

Patients’ responses to medications may vary, and ongoing monitoring is necessary to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, changes in appetite, or mood fluctuations. Some medications carry risks such as dependency, withdrawal symptoms, or rare but serious adverse effects. It is important to discuss all potential risks and benefits with your provider.

Medications for mental health conditions should not be discontinued without consulting a healthcare provider. If you experience severe side effects, worsening symptoms, or thoughts of self-harm, seek immediate medical attention.
